The one place in the outfit where colour is allowed.

Natural mulberry silk. Thirty-four centimetres square. Hand-rolled hem.

Those three things are the whole product, so here is what each one actually means.

Mulberry silk is the fibre itself, not polyester with a shine put on it. You can tell within a second of touching it: real silk is cool at first and then warms to your hand, and it falls in soft folds instead of springing back into creases. Plenty of pocket squares sold under the word "silk" are woven polyester, and one of the reasons this one costs what it does is that it is not.

Thirty-four centimetres is the size that works. The cheap ones are twenty, and twenty centimetres is the reason so many pocket squares have sunk out of sight an hour into the evening. A larger square has enough body to hold a fold and enough weight to stay where you put it.

Hand-rolled hem is the edge: the silk is rolled inwards and stitched by hand into a rounded cord instead of being pressed flat and run through a machine. It is the one detail that separates a good square from a cheap one. It is why the folded edge stands up rather than lying dead in the pocket, and it is the first thing anyone who knows will look at.

Three colours

  • Ivory — no contrast at all. Goes with all six Codes and never argues with anything else you are wearing.
  • Black — solid and understated. Made for the Power, Midnight and Contrast Codes.
  • Red — the deliberate exception. One block of colour against an outfit built on none, which is exactly what a pocket square is for.

How to fold it

Do not aim for symmetry. Pinch it in the middle, let the corners fall where they fall, push it into the pocket and adjust once. A pocket square that looks arranged looks anxious, and the whole point of the thing is to look like you did not think about it.

Care

Silk does not go in the machine. Cool hand wash or dry clean, dry flat away from the sun, and press on the lowest setting with a cloth between the iron and the silk. Never iron the rolled edge flat — that edge is the product.
